shrine

A shrine is a small holy place, and it is small on purpose. A temple or a church is a building you go into; a shrine is often no bigger than a shelf — a box, a gate, a stone by a road — and what makes it holy is the one thing kept there. The Latin word behind it means a case for keeping something precious, which is the whole idea in four words. It travels well past religion, too.
