One of the very few words invented by a film. In Fellini's La Dolce Vita a news photographer is called Paparazzo, and within a year the name had come off the character and onto the job. The drawing is the scene it came from: a café table, a woman who would like her coffee, a man crouching with a flash. Paparazzi is the plural — one of them is a paparazzo — though English mostly uses the plural for everybody, because they arrive in groups. The word is never neutral. A photographer is invited. The paparazzi are the ones outside, waiting for the door to open.
