Greek again: onoma, a name, and poiein, to make. A made name — a word built out of the noise it stands for. Buzz, hiss, splash, clang, purr. The drawing is the whole idea in one picture: the mouth opens and the bell itself comes out, because here the word and the sound are the same object. Say it and you have made the noise. Every language does this, and no two agree. An English dog says woof, a Turkish one hav, a Japanese one wan — which tells you these are not recordings. They are each language's best guess, spelled with the letters it happens to own.
