emergent

Emergent describes something that appears only when many small parts work together, and that no single part has on its own. One ant is nearly helpless; the colony digs tunnels, farms fungus and defends itself, and no ant was ever given the plan. That behaviour is emergent — it belongs to the group, not to any member of it. One brain cell cannot think; billions of them, wired together, do. You will meet the word most often in AI now. A language model is trained only to predict the next word, yet past a certain size it starts doing things nobody built in: translating, writing code, doing arithmetic. Researchers call those emergent abilities. The usual phrase is an emergent property of something.
