Stagnation starts with water. A stagnum in Latin is a pool with no outlet — nothing flows in, nothing flows out — and in a few weeks it turns green and begins to smell. Nothing poisoned it. It went bad because nothing moved. Carry that pond anywhere and the word still works: a career doing the same job you did three years ago, an economy that neither grows nor shrinks. The drawing takes it literally: stand still long enough and the moss grows on you. Stagnation is not a fall, and that is what makes it so hard to notice — nobody is worse off this month. The test is simple. Is anything moving through this? If nothing is, it is stagnant, however comfortable it looks.
