stagnation

Stagnation starts with water: a stagnum in Latin is a pool with no outlet — nothing flows in or out, and soon it turns green. Nothing poisoned it; it went bad because nothing moved. The word fits a career doing the job you did three years ago, or an economy that neither grows nor shrinks. In the animation, a man has stood still for so long that moss has grown on him.
