Hegemony is leadership so large that others follow without being made to. A country with hegemony does not need to invade its neighbours: its money, its films, its language and its rules are already everywhere, and smaller countries fit themselves around them. Think of a giant walking a road with a line of small figures stepping inside his shadow. Nobody is tied to him; they simply go where he goes. That is the difference from plain control. Hegemony works through influence, habit and what seems normal. The word is used for firms too, as in Google's hegemony in search, and for ideas, when one way of thinking becomes the only one people can imagine. The adjective is hegemonic.
