indolence

Indolence is stranger underneath than it looks. The Latin is in- (not) plus dolere, to feel pain, so indolence is the state of nothing hurting enough to move you. That is the whole word, and it is also what separates it from being tired: a tired man wants to get up and cannot, an indolent man can and sees no reason to. In the drawing, only his shadow is doing the painting. The grass grows long, the letter goes unanswered, the tap keeps dripping, and none of it stings. The word carries a mild judgement, so watch who you aim it at — a rich uncle is indolent, a nurse after a double shift is not. It is laziness that has settled in and got comfortable.

O latim diz tudo: in- (não) mais dolere, sentir dor. Indolence é nada doer o suficiente para tirar você da cadeira. Não é cansaço: o cansado quer levantar e não consegue; o indolente consegue e não vê motivo. O mato cresce, a carta fica sem resposta, e nada disso o incomoda. A palavra julga um pouco: um tio rico é indolente; uma enfermeira após turno duplo, não.

Akar Latinnya menjelaskan semuanya: in- (tidak) + dolere, merasa sakit. Indolence berarti tidak ada yang cukup menyakitkan untuk membuat Anda bangkit. Maka ini bukan lelah: orang lelah ingin bangun tetapi tidak mampu; orang indolen mampu tetapi tidak melihat alasannya. Rumput meninggi, surat tak dibalas, dan tak satu pun terasa mengganggu. Kata ini sedikit menghakimi.

語源はラテン語の in-（〜ない）と dolere（痛みを感じる）。indolence とは「立ち上がるほど痛むものが何もない」状態です。疲労とは違います。疲れた人は立ちたいのに立てない。indolent な人は立てるのに理由を見いだせない。草は伸び、手紙は返されず、蛇口は垂れ続け、それでも少しも刺さらない。少し人を責める色のある語です。
