English already had the phrase wearing many hats, and the drawing takes it literally. A hat drops, he catches it and becomes a chef. Another drops and he is an explorer with a telescope. The word is not for somebody with a lot of hobbies. Each hat is real work, done properly. That is why it stays a rare word: it is easy to be interested in five things and very hard to be good at them, and only the second one earns it.
