melancholy

Melancholy is sadness without a cause you can name. The old doctors did name one: the word is Greek for black bile, one of the four fluids they believed set a person's temperament, and too much of it was supposed to make you grave and inward. The medicine was wrong; the observation was not. Look at the drawing — a man holds an umbrella, and the rain is falling underneath it. That is the whole difference between this word and ordinary unhappiness. You can shelter from weather that comes from outside.
