In the nick of time means with almost nothing to spare — the train pulling in as you reach the platform, the hand catching the glass halfway down. The picture inside the phrase is old and worth having: a nick is a small cut, and counts used to be kept by cutting notches into a stick, one notch to a unit. The nick of time is that exact notch, the last one before too late. Nothing in the phrase means early, and nothing in it means lucky in some general way. It means one notch. Move the moment a single mark along the stick and you are telling a different story.
