foster

Foster means to feed something so that it grows. The old word behind it meant exactly that — to feed — which is why the same word covers a foster family, who take a child in and raise them without adopting them. Keep the feeding picture and the rest of the word makes sense. You do not foster a thing by ordering it to grow. You foster it by putting the conditions around it and then waiting: a school fosters curiosity by leaving good questions lying about, a manager fosters trust by being the same person in a bad week as in a good one. Everything you foster does its own growing.

Foster es alimentar algo para que crezca. La palabra antigua detrás significaba justo eso, «dar de comer», y por eso sirve también para una familia foster, que acoge a un niño y lo cría sin adoptarlo. No se foster mandando crecer: pones las condiciones alrededor y esperas. Lo que alimentas, crece solo.

Foster é alimentar algo para que cresça. A palavra antiga por trás queria dizer exatamente isso — dar de comer — e por isso serve também para uma família foster, que acolhe uma criança e a cria sem adotar. Não se foster mandando crescer: você põe as condições em volta e espera. O que cresce, cresce sozinho.

Foster, c'est nourrir une chose pour qu'elle pousse. Le vieux mot derrière signifiait exactement cela — nourrir — d'où la famille foster, qui accueille un enfant et l'élève sans l'adopter. On ne foster pas en ordonnant de grandir : on met les conditions autour, puis on attend. Ce que l'on nourrit pousse tout seul.

Foster berarti memberi makan sesuatu supaya tumbuh. Kata lama di baliknya memang berarti "memberi makan", dan karena itu dipakai juga untuk keluarga foster, yang mengasuh anak tanpa mengangkatnya sebagai anak sendiri. Anda tidak foster dengan menyuruh tumbuh: Anda siapkan keadaannya, lalu menunggu.

foster は、育つように養うことです。もとの古い言葉が「食べさせる」という意味で、だから里親家族(foster family)——養子にはせず子どもを引き取って育てる家族——にも同じ語を使います。foster は「育て」と命じることではありません。まわりに条件を整えて、あとは待つ。育つのは相手のほうです。
