besmirch

besmirch

what it means

To besmirch is to leave a mark on something clean — and the something is almost always a name. The word has a smirch inside it, an old plain word for a smear or a stain, so whatever you were already picturing is right: a white thing carried through mud. What makes besmirch worth learning is that the mud does not have to be true. A rumour besmirches a reputation whether or not anyone ever proves it, because the mark is there now and everyone can see it. That is why the word turns up in courts and newspapers. Keeping a thing clean is easy. Getting a stain out is a different job.
