eerily

Eerily describes a strangeness that comes from something being almost normal, and not normal at all. An empty playground is not frightening; a playground that is eerily quiet is, because the swings are there, the paint is bright, and the one thing that belongs — noise — is missing. That is the whole trick of the word. It is not used for the loudly frightening things: a scream is not eerie. It is used when everything is in its place and something small is wrong with the picture, and you feel it before you can say what it is. Eerily calm. Eerily familiar. Eerily still.
