mellifluous

Mellifluous is two Latin words stuck together and never taken apart: mel, honey, and fluere, to flow. Honey-flowing. It describes sound — a voice, a tune, a line of speech — and it means the sound moves the way honey moves: slowly, thickly, with nothing sharp anywhere in it. The drawing takes the root at its word and pours honey over everything, the man and the bell alike, until even the ringing looks slow. Use it for sound only. A honey-flowing voice is mellifluous; a kind act is not. And keep the thickness in mind, because mellifluous is smooth — which is lovely in a singer and, in a salesman, is sometimes the warning.

mellifluous はラテン語の二語が溶け合った言葉です。mel（蜂蜜）と fluere（流れる）——「蜜が流れる」。声や旋律など、音についてだけ使います。とろりと遅く、角のない動き方をする音です。絵では蜜が男にも鐘にも垂れていて、鐘の音まで遅く見えます。
