hullabaloo

Hullabaloo is a racket. The word is built out of noise — it is a rhyming echo, the same trick as helter-skelter or hurly-burly — and English kept it because it sounds like a room where too much is happening at once. The drawing puts a man on a stool with a book, and behind him a trumpet in his ear and another man mid-yell. That is the part to hold on to: hullabaloo is noise measured against somebody trying to think. It sits very close to brouhaha, and here is the difference worth keeping. A brouhaha is a fuss about something. A hullabaloo is the noise itself, whether or not it is about anything.
