excursion

An excursion is a short trip away from what you were doing, with the return already built in. The word is ex (out) joined to the old word for run — the same one inside current and course — so an excursion is a running-out: you leave the straight line, you go and look, you come back to the line. That is why a school excursion is not a holiday and a day at the coast is not emigration. Nobody packs for an excursion. And it travels beyond trips: a speaker who breaks off for two minutes about their dog has made an excursion, and the room waits for them to come back to the point.
