lummox

A lummox is a big clumsy person, and the word is almost fond. That is the part to get right. A lummox is not stupid and not unkind — a lummox is the one whose elbow finds the glass, whose foot finds the chair leg, who ends up apologising to furniture. The size and the good intentions are both inside the word: you would not call a small careful person a lummox, and you would not use it about someone who broke things on purpose either. It is old, informal, and heard far more often about yourself, right after the crash, than about anybody else.

Un lummox es una persona grande y torpe, y la palabra es casi cariñosa. No es tonto ni cruel: es aquel cuyo codo encuentra el vaso y cuyo pie encuentra la pata de la silla, y que acaba pidiéndole perdón a los muebles. Se usa más sobre uno mismo, justo después del ruido.

Um lummox é uma pessoa grande e desajeitada, e a palavra é quase carinhosa. Não é burro nem ruim: é aquele cujo cotovelo acha o copo e cujo pé acha o pé da cadeira, e que acaba pedindo desculpas aos móveis. Usa-se mais sobre si mesmo, logo depois do estrondo.
