oblivious

oblivious

what it means

Oblivious means the thing was right there and you did not take it in. It grew out of the old word for forgetting — the same one inside oblivion — and that is the exact flavour: not refusing to see, simply not registering. This matters, because oblivious gets used where people mean ignoring, and the two are opposites in the only way that counts. Someone ignoring you has noticed. Someone oblivious to you has not, and would be surprised to hear there was anything to notice. It is nearly always followed by to: oblivious to the noise, to the crowd, to the mess left behind.

Quase sempre vem com to.

Presque toujours suivi de to.

Hampir selalu diikuti to.

Neredeyse hep to ile kullanılır.
