cacophony

Greek built this one out of two plain parts: kakos, bad, and phone, sound. Bad sound — but not one bad sound. A cacophony is many sounds arriving at once with no agreement between them, which is why the drawing puts them all in a blender. Car horns, a drill, three conversations and a television, every one of them at full volume. The word carries strain: you hear a cacophony, you do not listen to it. And it moves away from noise easily. A cacophony of colours is a room where every wall argues. A cacophony of opinions is a meeting where nobody waits their turn. Its opposite is symphony — the same phone, sounding together.

Del griego kakos, malo, y phone, sonido. Pero no es un ruido feo: son muchos sonidos a la vez que no se ponen de acuerdo, por eso el dibujo los mete todos en una licuadora. Una cacofonía se oye, no se escucha. Su contrario es symphony: el mismo phone, sonando juntos.

Dari Yunani kakos, buruk, dan phone, bunyi. Bukan satu bunyi jelek, melainkan banyak bunyi sekaligus yang tidak saling sepakat — karena itu gambarnya memasukkan semuanya ke dalam blender. Kakofoni itu terdengar, bukan disimak. Lawannya symphony: phone yang sama, berbunyi bersama.

Yunanca kakos kötü, phone ses demek. Ama tek bir çirkin ses değil: aynı anda gelen, birbiriyle anlaşmayan çok sayıda ses — çizimdeki blender bu yüzden. Kakofoni duyulur, dinlenmez. Karşıtı symphony: aynı phone, birlikte.

ギリシャ語の kakos（悪い）と phone（音）から。ひとつの嫌な音ではなく、噛み合わない音が一度に押し寄せること——だから絵では全部をミキサーに入れています。カコフォニーは聞こえてくるもので、聴くものではありません。反対語は symphony、同じ phone が一緒に鳴る語です。
