what it means
A tally is a count you can see. The old way of keeping one is still the clearest: four upright marks and a fifth struck across them, again and again, so that a whole afternoon of shouting can be read off a wall afterwards. That is what a tally does — it takes things that happen once and vanish, and leaves them somewhere countable. Votes, points, goals, days without an accident. The word is a verb as well, and it does two jobs: you tally the votes when you count them up, and two accounts tally when they come out at the same number. If your total and mine tally, we are looking at the same thing.
