Dual means one thing that has two of something, at the same time and on purpose. A car with dual controls has two steering wheels and two sets of pedals, so the instructor can take over without changing seats. Someone with dual nationality holds two passports and is not half a citizen of either. That is the part worth keeping: dual is not a split. The two do not take turns and they do not get half each — both are fully there, inside one thing. Watch the spelling as well. Dual is two of something; a duel is a fight between two people, and the two sound exactly alike.
