A prosthetic part is a made part that takes over a job the body used to do — a leg, a hand, an eye, a tooth. The word is worth learning carefully, because it points at the replacement and not at the loss. A prosthetic leg is a thing with a knee and a foot that a person walks on, and the interesting fact about it is the walking. Good ones are measured, fitted, learned and lived with, which is why people talk about a prosthetic being broken in, the way boots are. The thing itself is a prosthesis; prosthetics is the whole business of making them.
