resilient

Resilient does not mean hard. That is the usual mistake, and the word itself corrects it: it is built from to leap back, and a thing can only leap back if it bent first. A steel bar is strong; a spring is resilient, and the spring is the one you want under a train. So a resilient person is not the one nothing touches. It is the one who takes the hit, goes all the way down, and comes back to their own shape — often the next morning, often after a bad night. Something that never bends at all is not resilient. It is waiting for a load big enough to snap it.

Resilient no significa duro. La palabra viene de «volver de un salto», y algo sólo puede volver así si antes se dobló. Una barra de acero es fuerte; un muelle es resilient, y es el muelle lo que quieres bajo un tren. Lo que nunca se dobla no es resilient: espera la carga que lo parta.

Resilient não quer dizer duro. A palavra vem de "voltar num salto", e só volta assim o que antes dobrou. Uma barra de aço é forte; uma mola é resilient, e é a mola que você quer debaixo de um trem. O que nunca dobra não é resilient: espera a carga que vai parti-lo.

Resilient ne veut pas dire dur. Le mot vient de « revenir d'un bond », et l'on ne revient ainsi que si l'on a d'abord plié. Une barre d'acier est solide ; un ressort est resilient, et c'est le ressort qu'on veut sous un train. Ce qui ne plie jamais n'est pas resilient : cela attend la charge qui le brisera.

Resilient bukan berarti keras. Katanya dibangun dari "melenting kembali", dan sesuatu hanya bisa melenting kembali kalau tadi sempat melengkung. Batang baja itu kuat; per itu resilient, dan per-lah yang Anda mau di bawah kereta. Yang tidak pernah melengkung bukan resilient: ia menunggu beban yang mematahkannya.

Resilient, sert demek değildir. Kelime "geri sıçramak"tan kurulur ve bir şey ancak önce büküldüyse geri sıçrayabilir. Çelik çubuk güçlüdür; yay resilient'tır ve trenin altında isteyeceğiniz şey yaydır. Hiç bükülmeyen şey resilient değildir; onu kıracak kadar büyük bir yükü bekliyordur.

resilient は「硬い」ではありません。語のもとは「跳ねて戻る」。跳ねて戻れるのは、いちど曲がったものだけです。鋼の棒は強い。ばねは resilient で、列車の下にほしいのはばねのほうです。まったく曲がらないものは resilient ではなく、折れるだけの重さが来るのを待っているのです。
