what it means
Tenacious is about grip. It comes from the word for to hold, and every use of it keeps a hand somewhere in the picture: a tenacious climber, a tenacious cough, a tenacious rumour that will not be shaken off. That is why it is not quite the same as determined. Determination is about the goal ahead of you; tenacity is about what you already have hold of and will not release. And it is one of the few words that works as a compliment and a complaint in equal measure, depending entirely on which end of the grip you happen to be standing at.
