fractious

Fractious is what a group is like just before it breaks. The word sits on the same root as fracture, and it describes the state rather than the event: nobody has walked out yet, but every sentence is landing badly, and the next small thing will not be small. It is used of tired children, of long meetings, of parliaments in a bad week. And it is a temperature word more than a character word — a fractious afternoon does not mean the people in it are difficult people. It means the room is one shove away from a quarrel, and everybody in it can feel that.

Fractious adalah keadaan sebuah kelompok tepat sebelum pecah. Katanya seakar dengan fracture, dan ia menggambarkan keadaannya, bukan peristiwanya: belum ada yang keluar, tapi setiap kalimat jatuh dengan buruk, dan hal kecil berikutnya tidak akan kecil. Ini kata suhu, bukan kata watak.

Fractious, bir topluluğun kırılmadan hemen önceki hâlidir. Kelime fracture ile aynı köktendir ve olayı değil, durumu anlatır: henüz kimse çıkıp gitmemiştir ama her cümle kötü düşmektedir ve sıradaki küçük şey küçük olmayacaktır. Karakter değil, sıcaklık kelimesidir.

fractious とは、集団が割れる直前の状態のことです。fracture(骨折・破断)と同じ根を持ち、出来事ではなく状態を指します。まだ誰も席を立ってはいない。けれどどの一言も悪いほうへ落ちていて、次の小さな一件は小さく済みません。人柄の言葉ではなく、部屋の温度の言葉です。
