adaptable

Adaptable is about changing yourself to fit the situation. The word is built from to fit, and that is the direction it runs: the world stays as it is, and you take a different shape. It is worth holding next to resilient, which sits beside it in this chapter. A resilient thing takes a hit and returns to the shape it had. An adaptable thing does not return — it becomes something a little different and stays that way, because the new shape works better here. Neither is braver than the other. The only question is whether the old shape was still worth going back to.
