pandemonium

Uproar everywhere at once, with nobody left steering.

what it means

Pandemonium was invented, and we know exactly when. Milton needed a name for the capital city of hell in Paradise Lost, so he built one out of Greek: pan, all, and daimon, demon. All the demons, in one place. Every use since is still that room. Pandemonium is not simply noise — it is noise plus the fact that nothing is in charge any more. The drawing has a chair in mid-air and a man sitting in a trunk with no idea how he got there, which is the right feeling exactly: things are moving and nobody is steering. It is the strongest word in this chapter. Save it for when order is genuinely gone.

地獄の首都の名で、ギリシャ語の pan(すべて)と daimon(悪魔)から。
