A fluke is the right result reached by completely the wrong route. Watch the golfer. The swing is bad, the ball goes sideways, it strikes the rake, he lands flat on his back — and it drops in the hole. Nobody would call that skill, and the scorecard does not care. That gap is where the word lives: the outcome was real, the method was an accident. It is why fluke sounds modest about your own win and rude about somebody else's. The same shot, two different sentences. The word came out of billiards slang in the 1850s, for exactly this kind of shot, and it has never needed to mean anything else.
