Set off in one direction and drifting out of it.
what it means
Wayward is a road word worn short. It began as away-ward — turned away, facing off the road — and the picture inside it never left: something set out in one direction and is not staying in it. The drawing shows a man mid-walk with one leg kicking off on its own, and his face is the important detail. He is not choosing this. That is the difference between wayward and rebellious. A rebel picks a different road on purpose. A wayward thing is simply not holding its line — which is why the word works for a shot, a strand of hair, a river, and a child, all with the same small note of exasperation.
