The Stoics were a school of Greek philosophers who taught in a painted porch in Athens — the stoa — and the word still carries their idea: you do not choose what happens, only what you do with your face. So a stoic person takes bad news without letting it show. The drawing puts a man beside a marble bust and gives them the same expression, and that is the whole word, including its cost. The stone is not calm; it simply cannot feel anything. A stoic person is not the stone — the feeling is there, held still on purpose — but from outside the two look identical, and that is why it is a compliment that sometimes worries the people who love you.
