A song built to make someone stop fighting sleep.
what it means
A lullaby is a song with a job. Most songs want you awake and listening; this one wants the opposite, and everything about it is shaped to that end — slow, repetitive, quiet, going nowhere on purpose. Even the name is built from the sound of the work: lull, to calm, plus the bye said over a cradle. The drawing makes the point in one image: a father holding a baby that is also a musical note, because at that moment the song and the child are the same object. Any song can be sung softly. A lullaby is one that was written to end in sleep.
