Maleficent is evil as a craft. The man in the drawing sits at a bench and makes a small black cloud with his hands, carries it out on a hook, hangs it over one flower, and waits for the lightning. Then he tips his hat. Nothing about that is impulsive. The word is built from Latin male, badly, and facere, to do — the exact mirror of beneficent, which is doing good. So it is not the word for someone who causes harm carelessly, or in a temper, or by being somewhere they should not have been. It is for someone who intended the harm, went to the trouble, and was pleased with the result.
