catastrophe

A catastrophe is not simply a very bad thing. The Greek behind it means an overturning, and it was the name for the turn at the end of a play, where everything standing gets tipped over. The drawing holds the second before that turn: a tower of cups and saucers, and a cheerful man adding one more. Nothing has broken yet. Everything is about to. That is the shape of the word — it arrives all at once and takes the whole structure with it, which is what separates a catastrophe from a bad week you can still walk back from. Afterwards there is no stack, only pieces.

Una catastrophe no es solo algo muy malo. El griego detrás significa un vuelco: era el giro final de una obra de teatro, donde todo lo que estaba en pie se da la vuelta. El dibujo guarda el segundo anterior: la torre de tazas y un hombre feliz añadiendo una más. Nada se ha roto todavía. Después no queda torre, solo trozos.

Uma catastrophe não é só algo muito ruim. O grego por trás significa um viramento: era o giro final de uma peça, quando tudo o que estava de pé tomba. O desenho guarda o segundo anterior — a torre de xícaras e um homem alegre pondo mais uma. Nada quebrou ainda. Depois não há torre, só cacos.

Une catastrophe n'est pas seulement une très mauvaise chose. Le grec derrière veut dire un renversement : c'était le tour final d'une pièce, où tout ce qui tenait debout bascule. Le dessin garde la seconde d'avant — la tour de tasses, et un homme ravi qui en ajoute une. Rien n'est encore cassé. Après, il n'y a plus de tour, seulement des morceaux.

Catastrophe bukan sekadar hal yang sangat buruk. Kata Yunani di baliknya berarti terbalik — dulu nama bagi putaran terakhir sebuah lakon, saat semua yang berdiri roboh. Gambar itu menahan detik sebelumnya: menara cangkir dan seorang pria riang yang menambah satu lagi. Sesudahnya tidak ada menara, hanya pecahan.

Catastrophe yalnızca çok kötü bir şey değildir. Ardındaki Yunanca sözcük devrilme demek: bir oyunun sonundaki, ayakta duran her şeyin tepetaklak olduğu dönüşün adıydı. Resim o dönüşten önceki saniyeyi tutuyor. Sonrasında kule yoktur, yalnızca parçalar vardır.

catastrophe は「とても悪いこと」ではありません。語源のギリシャ語は「ひっくり返ること」——芝居の最後、立っていたものがすべて倒れる転回の名でした。絵はその一秒前を捉えています。カップの塔と、もう一つ足そうとする上機嫌の男。まだ何も割れていない。あとに残るのは塔ではなく、破片だけです。
