brazen

Brazen once meant made of brass, and the metal is still doing the work: brass does not blush. So a brazen act is not a sneaky one. The whole point is that it happens in the open, in front of the person who could stop it. Look at the drawing — he is not reaching into the jar while nobody watches. He is lifting the entire stack out, slowly, with the officer standing right there. Ordinary nerve hides. Brazen nerve makes eye contact. It is also why the word survives being caught: a brazen lie is one that keeps going after everyone in the room knows.

Brazen significaba antes hecho de latón, y el metal sigue trabajando: el latón no se sonroja. No es descaro a escondidas. En el dibujo, el hombre no mete la mano cuando nadie mira: saca la pila entera, despacio, con el policía delante. La caradura normal se esconde; la brazen te mira a los ojos.

Brazen já significou feito de latão, e o metal continua trabalhando: latão não cora. Não é atrevimento às escondidas. No desenho, o homem não enfia a mão quando ninguém vê: tira a pilha inteira, devagar, com o policial ali na frente. O descaramento comum se esconde; o brazen olha nos olhos.

Brazen a d'abord voulu dire fait de laiton, et le métal travaille encore : le laiton ne rougit pas. Ce n'est pas un culot en cachette. Sur le dessin, l'homme ne plonge pas la main quand personne ne regarde : il sort la pile entière, lentement, sous les yeux du policier. Le culot ordinaire se cache ; le culot brazen vous regarde en face.

Brazen dulu berarti terbuat dari kuningan, dan logam itu masih bekerja: kuningan tidak tersipu. Ini bukan nekat diam-diam. Di gambar, lelaki itu tidak mengambil saat tak ada yang melihat: ia mengangkat seluruh tumpukan, pelan-pelan, di depan polisi.

Brazen eskiden pirinçten yapılmış demekti ve metal hâlâ iş görüyor: pirinç kızarmaz. Bu, gizli saklı bir yüzsüzlük değildir. Resimde adam kimse bakmazken elini daldırmıyor; polis tam karşısında dururken bütün yığını ağır ağır kaldırıyor.

brazen はもともと「真鍮でできた」という意味で、その金属が今も効いています。真鍮は赤面しません。だからこれは、こそこそした厚かましさではありません。絵の男は、誰も見ていない隙に手を伸ばしたりしない。警官が目の前に立っているのに、山ごとゆっくり持ち上げるのです。
