kinsman

A kinsman is a man of your blood — a relative, but the old word for it, and it carries the whole line rather than the household. Kin is what you were born into: family in the wide sense, cousins you have never met, the surname on a gravestone. The drawing puts a man in a jumper next to a knight in armour, six hundred years apart, shaking hands — and then grows them the same moustache, which locks together in the middle. That is kinship. Not who you live with, not who you chose, but the thing carried down the line whether anyone likes it or not. Kinswoman is the same word for a woman.

Un kinsman es un pariente varón, en la palabra antigua: la línea entera, no la casa. Kin es aquello en lo que naciste: primos que nunca viste, un apellido en una lápida. En el dibujo, un hombre en jersey y un caballero con armadura, seis siglos aparte, se dan la mano; luego les crece el mismo bigote, enlazado en el centro. No desenho, um homem de suéter e um cavaleiro de armadura, separados por seis séculos, apertam as mãos; então cresce neles o mesmo bigode, preso no meio. Parentesco não é quem você escolheu: é o que desce pela linha.

Kinsman, c'est un parent masculin, dans le mot ancien : non pas la maisonnée, la lignée entière. Kin, c'est ce dans quoi on naît : des cousins jamais vus, un nom sur une tombe. Dans le dessin, un homme en pull et un chevalier en armure se serrent la main, six siècles d'écart ; puis la même moustache leur pousse, nouée au milieu. La parenté n'est pas ce qu'on choisit.

Kinsman berarti kerabat laki-laki dalam kata yang tua: bukan satu rumah, melainkan seluruh garis keturunan. Kinsman は男の親族のこと。ただし古い言い方で、同居する家族ではなく血の線全体を指します。kin とは、生まれ落ちた側のもの——会ったこともないいとこ、墓石に刻まれた姓。絵では、セーターの男と甲冑の騎士が六百年を隔てて握手し、やがて同じ口ひげが伸びて真ん中で結ばれます。親族とは、選んだ相手ではなく、受け継いだものです。
