what it means
Borrowed whole from German, because English never built one of its own: Schaden is harm, Freude is joy. The joy you feel at somebody else's harm. It has to be small harm, and it helps if they had it coming — the drawing is the exact dose. A man sails past with an enormous cake, very pleased with himself, and goes down. Nobody is hurt. The couple watching cannot help laughing, and neither can you. That is the word. It is not cruelty, which wants the harm to happen; schadenfreude only enjoys it once it has. English keeps the German capital S off it and the guilt on.
