jaunty

Jaunty is not happy — it is happy showing in how you move. The word is a worn-down gentil, the French for well-born, and it kept the swagger and lost the manners. In the drawing nothing happens: a man in a red hat simply walks. But the walk is the whole word. Chin up, arms swinging, a small bounce at each step, and a finger to the hat brim for nobody in particular. You can be pleased and show none of it; jaunty is the version that shows. It attaches to things too — a jaunty hat, a jaunty tune — always meaning tilted a little, on purpose, and pleased about it.

Jaunty no es estar contento: es que se te note al andar. La palabra viene del francés gentil, bien nacido; se quedó con el garbo y perdió los modales. En el dibujo no pasa nada: un hombre con sombrero rojo camina. Pero el andar es toda la palabra — barbilla alta, un rebote en cada paso, un toque al ala del sombrero. Un sombrero jaunty es uno ladeado a propósito.

Jaunty não é estar feliz: é a felicidade aparecendo no jeito de andar. A palavra vem do francês gentil, bem-nascido — ficou o gingado, foram-se as maneiras. No desenho não acontece nada: um homem de chapéu vermelho caminha. Mas o andar é a palavra inteira — queixo erguido, um salto em cada passo, a mão tocando a aba do chapéu para ninguém. Um chapéu jaunty é torto de propósito.

Jaunty, ce n'est pas être content : c'est que ça se voie à la démarche. Du français gentil, bien né : il a gardé l'allure et perdu les manières. Dans le dessin, il ne se passe rien : un homme au chapeau rouge marche. Mais la démarche est tout le mot — menton levé, un rebond à chaque pas, un doigt au bord du chapeau. Un chapeau jaunty est incliné exprès.

Jaunty bukan sekadar senang, melainkan senang yang terlihat dari cara berjalan. Katanya berasal dari gentil dalam bahasa Prancis, 'berdarah baik': gayanya tinggal, sopan santunnya hilang. Di gambar tak ada kejadian apa pun — seorang pria bertopi merah hanya berjalan. Tapi jalannya itulah seluruh maknanya: dagu terangkat, memantul tiap langkah, jari menyentuh tepi topi.

Jaunty, mutlu olmak değil; mutluluğun yürüyüşe yansımasıdır. Kelime Fransızca gentil, yani iyi doğmuş sözünden gelir: caka kalmış, terbiye gitmiş. Çizimde hiçbir şey olmuyor, kırmızı şapkalı bir adam yürüyor sadece. Ama kelimenin tamamı o yürüyüştür — çene yukarıda, her adımda hafif bir zıplama, şapkanın kenarına dokunan bir parmak.

Jaunty は「うれしい」ではなく、「うれしさが歩き方に出ている」こと。語源はフランス語の gentil（生まれのよい）で、気取りだけが残り、行儀は消えました。絵では何も起きません。赤い帽子の男がただ歩くだけ。けれどその歩きが語そのもの。あごを上げ、一歩ごとに弾み、誰にともなく帽子のつばに指を当てる。jaunty な帽子とは、わざと傾けた帽子のことです。
