stratocracy

A stratocracy is a state run by its army. The Greek stratos means army, the root of strategy, the general's art. It goes further than a military coup that takes power for a while. In a stratocracy the army does not stand behind the government; the army is the government, and the law says so. Picture a ruler whose throne is a tank. The word is rare because true stratocracies are rare, and ancient Sparta is the example most often named. In most news writing people say military rule or junta instead. Keep stratocracy for when you mean the whole lasting system, not a single event.
