theocracy

A theocracy is a state ruled in the name of God. Theos is Greek for god, the same root as in theology and atheist. In a theocracy the laws are taken from religious texts, and the people who interpret those texts, priests or clerics, hold the final say. Picture a ruler on a chair who was handed the key from above: his right to rule comes not from voters but from heaven, or so the state says. Iran and Vatican City are the usual examples. The word does not cover every country with a state religion (England has one); it means a country where religious leaders actually govern. The adjective is theocratic.
