gregarious

Grex is Latin for a flock, and a gregarious animal is one that lives in a flock — sheep are gregarious, tigers are not. Carried over to people, the word keeps the flock inside it. A gregarious person does not merely put up with company; they are only quite themselves inside it, and company collects around them. In the drawing one man walks alone, then two walk together, then a whole crowd is laughing over his shoulders, and he never asked for any of it. That is the useful distinction. Confident is about you on your own. Friendly is how you treat whoever turns up. Gregarious is needing them to turn up.
