humdinger

A humdinger is the one out of the batch that everybody remembers. The word is American, cheerful and slightly old-fashioned, and it never means merely good. A good speech is a good speech; a humdinger of a speech is the one people are still quoting in the car on the way home. It works the way a beauty or a cracker works — the thing is not simply praised, it is singled out of a crowd of ordinary ones. And notice the shape it comes in: a humdinger of a match, of a storm, of a row. The storm is not a humdinger by itself. It is a humdinger of one.
