Supercilious is the raised eyebrow — and that is not a figure of speech, the word is built from the Latin for eyebrow. Which makes it one of the most precise insults in the language, because it names the exact muscle. A supercilious person does not argue with you and does not need to: the eyebrow goes up a quarter of an inch, the mouth stays perfectly polite, and you have been placed somewhere below the line without a single rude word being spoken.
