German, and it says what it does: poltern, to make a racket, plus Geist, ghost. A noisy ghost. A poltergeist is not the kind that appears at the end of the bed — it is the kind you never see, known only by what it moves. Chairs shift. The table jumps. Something falls in the kitchen and nothing is there. In the drawing the man does not even put his mug down; the furniture does all the haunting behind him, the ghost shows itself for a second, and then the room is a room again. That is the useful bit: a poltergeist is defined by the noise, not by the ghost.
