knoll

A knoll is a small hill with a rounded top — the sort you can walk up in a minute and see the whole field from. Size is the whole of the word. A mountain is a mountain and a hill is a hill; a knoll is the gentle swelling under both, with no cliff and no climb, just ground that has risen a little and come back down. Because knolls are small and often stand alone in flat country, they collect things: one tree, a bench, an old church, people looking for somewhere with a view to eat lunch. The word is quiet and slightly old-fashioned, and it lives in maps, walks and stories more than in conversation.
