adjacent

Adjacent means next to, and touching. It is built from the words for lying near, and the touching is what the word exists for: two adjacent rooms share a wall, two adjacent fields share a hedge. Put a lane between them and they are no longer adjacent, only nearby. That precision is why it turns up wherever nearness has consequences — adjacent land, adjacent seats, adjacent angles in geometry, which share a line and a corner. Keep it apart from its neighbour in this chapter, adjunct. Adjacent things sit beside one another and stay separate. An adjunct is joined on.

Adjacent es «al lado, y tocando». Está hecho de las palabras para «yacer cerca», y lo de tocar es lo importante: dos cuartos adjacent comparten una pared. Si hay un callejón entre medio, ya no son adjacent, sólo cercanos. No lo confundas con adjunct: lo adjacent sigue siendo aparte.

Adjacent é "ao lado, e encostado". É feito das palavras para "jazer perto", e o encostar é o que importa: dois quartos adjacent dividem uma parede. Ponha um beco entre eles e já não são adjacent, apenas próximos. Não confunda com adjunct: o que é adjacent continua separado.

Adjacent veut dire « à côté, et en contact ». Le mot est fait des termes pour « être couché près », et le contact est l'essentiel : deux pièces adjacent partagent un mur. adjacent は「となりで、しかも接している」という意味です。語のもとは「近くに横たわる」で、肝心なのは接していること。adjacent な二部屋は壁を共有します。あいだに路地が一本入れば、もう adjacent ではなく「近い」だけ。同じ章の adjunct とは別で、adjacent なものは並んでいても別々のままです。
