attire

Attire is clothing, but the word never arrives alone — it brings an occasion with it. Nobody looks at a friend in old track pants and says nice attire. You meet this word where there is a standard to meet: a wedding, an interview, a courtroom, a temple, a stage. That is why invitation cards reach for it. When a card says formal attire, it is not asking you to wear clothes — you were going to do that anyway. It is telling you which clothes, and quietly warning you that someone will look. So the difference is this: clothes are what hang in your cupboard. Attire is what you pick out of it, for a day that has rules.

Attire es ropa, pero nunca cualquier ropa: la palabra viene siempre con una ocasión. Nadie dice nice attire de la ropa vieja con la que uno anda en casa. Attire é roupa, mas nunca uma roupa qualquer: a palavra vem sempre com uma ocasião junto. Ninguém elogia o attire de quem está de camiseta velha em casa. Ela aparece onde existe uma regra: um casamento, uma entrevista, um tribunal. Quando o convite diz formal attire, ele não está pedindo que você se vista — isso você já ia fazer. Está dizendo com o quê.

Attire giysi demek ama her giysi değil: kelime yanında hep bir durum getirir. Evde giydiğiniz eski tişört için kimse attire demez. Bu kelime kuralın olduğu yerde çıkar — düğün, iş görüşmesi, mahkeme. Davetiyede formal attire yazıyorsa, size giyinmenizi söylemiyor; hangisini giyeceğinizi söylüyor.

attire は「服」ですが、どんな服でもいいわけではありません。この言葉には必ず「場面」がついてきます。家で着ている古いTシャツを attire とは呼びません。結婚式、面接、法廷——決まりがある場所で出てくる言葉です。招待状に formal attire とあれば、それは「服を着てきて」ではなく「どの服で来るか」を伝えています。
