curiosity

Curiosity is the wanting that comes before the knowing. It is the reason a hand goes to a closed lid when there is nothing to gain by opening it. The old word behind it means careful, attentive — it grew out of care — and that is the part people miss: curiosity is not idle. It is attention with an appetite, and it costs something. You have to stop what you were doing, admit that you do not know, and go and look. Which is why it fades in people who are never allowed to be wrong. The question was always cheap. Being seen not to know the answer is the price.

La curiosity, c'est le vouloir qui précède le savoir : la raison pour laquelle une main va vers un couvercle fermé sans rien avoir à y gagner. Le vieux mot derrière signifie « attentif, soigneux ». Elle n'est pas oisive : il faut s'arrêter, admettre qu'on ne sait pas, et aller voir.
