undulation

An undulation is one rise and one fall of a smooth, rolling movement — and the word almost always turns up in the plural, because that kind of movement never happens once. Watch a field of wheat when the wind crosses it. The whole surface lifts and drops in slow lines, and nothing is actually travelling except the shape. That is the picture, and it holds everywhere: a snake moves by undulation, so does a ribbon, so does a long piece of cloth held at one end. Then the word leaves the physical world. Land undulates, a voice undulates, a year's sales undulate — anything that goes up and down gently instead of jumping.
