expedition

An expedition is a journey where the journey itself is the job. In the clip, a man drags a loaded sledge through a blizzard, beard frozen, two small figures tied to the rope behind him — nobody goes to the shops like that. The Latin expedire means to free the feet, to make ready, and the same root sits inside expedite. An expedition is organised, it has a purpose, and it goes somewhere hard: an expedition to the pole, a research expedition, and only as a joke, a shopping expedition. It is not a trip — distance alone is not enough. It needs difficulty and intent.
